1848 was the Year of Revolutions. Absolutism against the forces of democracy and nationalism.

One of the most significant causes was nationalism.

Many of Europe's empires were multi-national empires - ie Russia, Austria- Hungary. The nationalities within these empires were looking for a truly national identity - something which the monarchies of Europe could not provide. An example of this was the rebellions in Germany, who offered the crown of a united Germany to King Frederick William IV. And it was rejected.

The major cause was that many of Europes monarchies from the ancien Regime failed to progress. In the aftermath of the French Revolution, many monarchs were worried revolution would spread. Conservative monarchs did all they could to stamp out ideas of revolution and democracy. In Austria-Hungary, the Emperor Ferdinand was forced to relent.

In France, People had enough of French King Louis Philippe - a member of the French Bourbon Royal Family. And France was proclaimed a republic - for the 2nd time.

Only one monarchy - Russia seemed immune from revolution under Nicholas 1. But while Russia avoided revolution in 1848, it only delayed the inevitable - assasination of Alexander II in 1881, and revolution in 1905 and 1917.

The American Revolution proved to the world that it was possible for the people to rise up against the tyranny of the crown and succeed.
