Just got my chin from a previous owner. Vet says he can afford to put on weight and has fungus resulting in sparse hair on legs. Currently on medication. Any suggestions how to fatten him up? Anyone has experience with fungus on chin? How long does it take to recover and what can I do to help? Thanks.

One of my girls had surgery, after which she wouldn't eat well for quite awhile. She get dangerously skinny, but we bulked her up by giving her baby formula as a supplement to her regular diet. Basically, we filled an empty cap from a milk jug with formula three times a day and she drank that until she started eating her food again. You can try including this as part of your chins regular diet, or just give more treats. Nuts are high in fat content, so they may be a good choice for treats, although you want to sure they are unsalted. If that fails, there are few chins I know that won't enjoy as many raisins as you're willing to give.

As for the fungus, I've never had fungus problems with either of my chins, but the lost hair should begin to grow back about a week after adequate treatment is started (as in treatment from a vet, not from the previous owner). My girl had surgery right after Christmas though, and her hair isn't fully grown back in yet because it's so thick. It'll take time before it's back to normal, but you should see the new hair starting as early as a week.

Good luck.

what kind of fungus? ringworm is a fungus and very contagious. you have meds, what are the meds? topical, oral? what are you giving it? and what about a report from their vet? did they give you documentation and a script ? sounds like he was neglected, and maybe they are telling you some crap about what is really wrong with the animal. sparse hair on the legs? fungus there too? take it to a vet and have them do a skin scraping to find out what it is. get the right medication, and most likely a good diet that chinchillas are supposed to be on will bring him back and put some weight on him. may need some extra vitamin suppliments too.
i just hope you didn't get him from someone that was self medicating the animal and didn't really know what was going on, perhaps because of neglect. could be why he's skinny

Hello,

We were told that our Dog, Lady, was allergic to plastic. She broke out in a fungus also and he gave us tablets to give her but I also put Polysporin on her chin. Oddly enough it worked and she is now happy.

Go to the cachins.org site. It is a great site and has all the info you need for chinchillas. They have a bunch of different feed mixes you can try to make for your chinchilla.
