Any dark or subdued color is appropriate.
It should be something you'd wear to church, a wedding, or other dignified ceremonial occasion.

What about wearing navy blue with white? Or even browns, grays, purple, and put on a white top or something. you dont have to go in all black. you will be surprised when you get to the funeral how the others are dressed. If you are worried about the colors, just stick to neutrals and avoid loud or bright colors such as reds, orange, yellow, bright greens, pink, etc.

Yes, you can get away with not wearing black to a funeral. Just follow these simple rules:

No excessive skin shoing (the point is to respect the deceased, not to pick someone up)

No bright or loud colors (neutrals are best and will show respect...head to toe white is very touch and go because it is associated with weddings)

Keep accessories, jewelry and hair simple (again, to show respect)

Just follow those rules. Essentially, anything that you would wear to church or work that isn't too loud, colorful, or attention grabbing.

Many people do not think black is NECESSARY anymore. It really depends on my relationship with the deceased and the family. I hope no one wears black to my funeral, as I want them to celebrate my life, not my passing. Go to your own heart. Good luck on your decision.

i work black and white houndstooth skirt, red sweater, black leather coat and black boots to my great grandmother's funeral last month. I was very classy and appropriate. it is very old fashioned to think you only have to wear black. My mom wore black and brown.

Dress style black pants or an at least knee length skirt and a dark colored, full covering blouse. (short or long sleeve should be fine)

I'm sorry for your loss and I hope this helps!

Just don't wear red unless you want to give the message that you are celebrating that the person is dead. Wear a conservative outfit in subdued colors.
