You can play a CD-R in a Standard CD player.... I do it all the time.

In order to play a CD-R in any CD Player the songs must be in WAV format and NOT MP3.... So you will need to get a program that will convert MP3's and other compressed music files into a WAV format. (I've been using MAGIX media manager)

Some newer CD players will play MP3 songs .

Now realize that MP3 is a compressed format, and WAV is an uncompressed format. WAV files are much larger so a disk may only hold 10 to 15 songs in WAV format.

Because MP3's are compressed there is some loss in sound fidelity. So converting a compressed MP3 to an uncompressed WAV file will not make it sound any better. However if you copy a music CD into WAV files and burn a CD-R it will have the same fidelity as the original CD as there won't be any compression done.

Yes you can burn to a cd-rw with a cd burner.. It depends on the length of the songs as to how many can burn.. Yes, you can play the cd in your car or home stereo if they are compatiable with cd-rw.

Yes. I use Rhapsody and Windows Media player and Maxell CDRw's. They may not play on some stereos but I can play mine in my house and my car (and that's all that really matters to me!)
Good luck.

yes and no..
quick answer is no.
cd-rw uses a different method for writing data on the disc so audio CD players can't read them (unless they are designed to read cd-rws)
also i don't think burning software will let you burn audio. it'll end up becoming a data CD with audio files on it.
If your cd player doesn't explicity say it can read cd-rw disks don't expect it to.
