What are some good novels or non-fiction books that are set in mid-19th century London? I'm writing this story that partially takes place in London during the American Civil War, and I know relatively little about life in London back in those days.

Basically, I just need a few suggestions of books that greatly deal with culture and specific locations in London during this time period. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

There's several good books about life in Victorian England, which is the period you want. "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens gives a real picture of the life of poor and nearly poor people. "Daily Life in Victorian England" by Sally Mitchell is a non-fiction book that will give you a good feel for how life was lived in 1850.
"Victorian London Street Life in Historic Photographs" gives a black-and white or sepia overview of London, plus it shows what some of the neighborhoods were like.

Your most suitable guess is possibly Milton. Paradise lost, Paradise Regained, or Sampson Agonistes. Oroonoko is easily 18th century ( your favorites are nineteenth century and Victorian era, via the way). Novels did not change into known till the nineteenth century so maximum works earlier that element were performs, masques, essays, and poetry( Oroonoko is a play, in order that that you understand). The Milton works i discussed are epic poems and are written as books. performs are likely the different most suitable e book-length selection. i'd advise Ben Jonson , a rival of Shakespeare yet Shakespeare become extra famous contained in the overdue sixteenth century even as Jonson wrote slightly later.
