its about the lord of the rings. and the battle of Pelennor Fields for minas tirith.

"Queen of Light took her bow, And then she turned to go,"

the queen of light is eowyn, and she grabbed her bow which means she went into battle.

"The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom, And walked the night alone."

aragorn is the prince of peace, and he embraced the gloom by walking the paths of the dead when he went under the mountain to get the dead men of dunharrow there for the battle.

"Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight, And time will tell us all."

sauron is the dark lord.

"Oh, throw down your plow and hoe, Rest not to lock your homes.
Side by side we wait the might of the darkest of them all."

most of the people who fought were farmers not soldiers.

"I hear the horses' thunder down in the valley below,
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, waiting for the eastern glow."

the horses were the the riders of rohan.

"The apples of the valley hold, The seeds of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care, Repay, do not forget, no, no.
Dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light.

The apples turn to brown and black, The tyrant's face is red."

the tyrant is sauron.

"Oh war is the common plight, Pick up your swords and fight.
The sky is filled with good and bad that mortals never know."

the sky is filled with good and bad could be a reference to the bad ringwriaths and the good eagles.

"Oh, well, the night is long, the beads of time pass slow,
Tired eyes on the sunrise, waiting for the eastern glow."

they fought through the night and waited for sunrise.

"The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall, the ringwraiths ride in black, Ride on."

****thats the biggest clue to this whole thing being about lord of the rings since it flatout says ringwraith. and tolkien made that word up.

theres other led zeppelin songs that are about lord of the rings.
Misty Mountain Hop
Over the Hills and Far Away
The Battle of Evermore
Ramble On

Robert Plant wrote the lyrics after reading a book on Scottish history. The lyrics are about the everlasting battle between night and day, which can also be interpreted as the battle between good and evil.
Many J.R.R. Tolkien fans see the lyrics as a reference to his book Return Of The King, where the lyrics could describe the Battle of Pelennor ("The drums will shake the castle wall, The ring wraiths ride in black"). Plant is a huge Tolkien fan, and referred to his books in "Ramble On" and "Misty Mountain Hop."

I have assertained that "Battle" is solely based upon the events surrounding the Battle of Pelennor Fields from Return of the King. The time span of the song encompasses events in the novel from Aragorn's parting for the Paths of the Dead until the end of the Battle of Pelennor Fields.
