Buffalo hides were used to make robes, tipi covers, clothing, moccasins, bags, and carrying cases. The working of hides was generally done by women who would tan them, remove the hair if necessary, and transform them into useful items.

Lakota clothing was made of animal skins including buffalo, deer, and elk. The women would spend many hours following the creation of the structure of the item of clothing decorating it with beads, bones or other natural objects of beauty.

Most Natives that you see in media and on TV are stereotypical models of the plains nations. The Sioux nation is what they mimic media images from. So what you see in the media is more accurate to Sioux nations.

Below is a list of tribal websites for different Sioux nations. Some are stated as Dakota. Many have links where you can learn about their tribe.

This website has some info on clothing. Go to file - edit and type in sioux to find that in particular.

This website is mainly text but there is a map.

Sioux tribes lived near buffalo. Many traditional meals included buffalo. Clothing was also made from buffalo hide.

First, let me say I find "Native American" more offensive than any sports team logo. The first Americans were white people. Ok, on topic: I am not offended by the Fighting Sioux. (not even the real name of the tribe, BTW. Any native who calls themself "Sioux" is a fraud). I am not offended by the Indians, Braves, Redskins, the Blackhawks, the state of Indiana, the city of Miami, or any other name "borrowed" from the names for native tribes. Hyper sensitive whiners, trying to get attention for themselves. I have better things to do with my life than worry about crap like that and I sure wish those people would quit giving my people a bad name. EDIT: Judging by my negative ratings, apparently someone is missing my point. What part is offensive? "Fighting Sioux" name cannot be offensive to a true aboriginal, as "Sioux" is not the name of the tribe. "Fighting" is used in connection to the Irish of Notre Dame, as well, and trust me when I say that the majority Irish of the community view it as a compliment. The fighting team does not give up, will defend it's ground until the end. Tell me how that is offensive. There is nothing negative to an aboriginal tribe in the name Fighting Sioux. Those that fight the name have no purpose in life beyond trying to call attention to themselves. EDIT 2: Last comment, because I'm heading off the hockey subject. I'm not missing the point when I consider "Native American" to be insulting. "Native American" is a poor choice for a title to lump a race of people together. Aboriginals of Canada and Mexico are the same race, several are from the same tribes. Native American is not an appropriate term. Aboriginal is better and actually preferred by myself and most others that I know. Heck, I'd take Indian before Native American.

If ever given the opportunity, visit the Sioux Indian Museum in Rapid City, South Dakota, and then visit their sacred hills called Su Papa.

Aside from the seven families of the Lakota please know that there are three distinct main groups: Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota.

What the Sioux wore of old is depicted in all the Hollywood movies, making the Lakota the stereotypical Plains Indian.
