When are you considered a legal resident of Arizona? Is it so many months after you being new employment, after you legal have your address changed, when you obtain an Arizona drivers license or what?

My husband and I are filing bankrupcy and divorce. The attorney said we need to get things going before he became a resident of AZ. He is living with his sister, hasn't filed for address change yet, but has a job starting today.

The rules are different for different purposes.

You are a legal resident the day you make your primary home there -- but there are further requirements to be a resident for purposes of, for example, voting, or getting in-state tuition, or running for office, or various other things.

Why are you asking? perhaps someone can answer more specifically if you say.

Well, when I was pulled over because the used car dealer let me leave the lot with expired plates (instead of the paper, temporary ones), I got a ticket for driving with my New York State driver license. I told the cop that I wasn't even sure if we were staying in AZ, and that we were living in a residential motel. She replied that since my kids were in school in AZ--I was considered a resident, and needed to get my AZ driver license.

The tickets were all dropped, when I brought all the proofs to court--but what a hassle.
