check the sender. Or the gauge is broken..replace one or the other if the water is not hot you have a false reading..

Uh oh, sounds like a bad thermostat or maybe a water pump. If the water is hot, but not boiling, perhaps its the temp sensor.

Best of luck!

Could be the coolant sensor. How do you know that the water isn't hot? What method did you use to find that out?
I'm not being a wise guy! I'm just interested to know exactly what's going on.

If the gauge shows high temp, but not much heat from the heater, you are low on coolant

If the thermostat is stuck, the heated water in the engine will not flow to the radiator. Your engine could be hot. & the water still cool.

check oil, some sensors are above the engine, thermostat may not be opening allowing hot out and cool water in.oil keep your internal temps down also, have you checked or changed it?

Sounds as if it may be the temperature sensor. Take it to your garage person and tell them the symptoms and let them diagnose the problem. If that is correct it shouldn't be too expensive.

Just like the rest, I'll say it's the sending unit bad.
