CD-r are recordable only once while cd-rw's can be written and erased several hundred times.

cd r is cd rom. you can write once and you can't able to delete or erase the contents in the cd.
cd rw is cd rewritable. you can erase the cd as much time as needed and you can write new contents.

Heylistenup is half right.
You can burn on both CD-R and CD-RW.
However you can only burns once on a CD-R even if you try formating it.
With CD-RW, you can formats and uses it for more than 7 times.

CD-R means it is a CD drive that only READS CDs
CD-RW means it can READ and WRITE CDs
So you could copy CDs (though it's illegal) or make your own CDs from downloaded songs.
So....the R stands for the "read" and the W stands for "write"
Oops, sorry....I was assuming you were talking about hardware...

son a CD-R means "Compact Disc-Recordable" once you record something on a CD-R you cant delete it and re record,but on a CD-RW (Compact Disc ReWritable) you can record,delete and do what ever,go to www.howstuffworks.com you will never have to ask others to get answers for such Qs.

CD (and DVD) R are rightable once (think printing to a single sheet of paper)
RW (CD and DVD both still) are writeable more than once (think floppy disk)
