He committed suicide. He took a cyanide capsule, and shot himself in the head, just to make sure. His body was burned outside his bunker, but there was not enough fuel available to burn the body completely and some of the remains were taken to the USSR.

He committed suicide in his bunker with his mistress. His burt remains were taken to Stalin in the Soviet Union and part of his skull is still in the former KGB achives. He shot himself in the head and his mistress took poison. then the reamining troops set his body and his mistress on fire with gasoline. But there was not enough to totally burn the bodies so they were taken to russian.
