I am just curious about the topic. Anything you would like to share? What is it like being autistic? Is it difficult to relate to people? And are you (or the person you know) a genius?

I am a special education teacher at an elementary school and we have one autistic 4th grade boy. He has been our student since he was in kindergarten. Communication is his weakness. He does not speak in normal conversation, instead he echoes what he hears. He memorizes commercials he hears on TV and on the radio. Everything he has learned has been through routine. He is learning how to read and write now. He uses the computer to learn math and language. The only bad things are when he does not get his way, he'll throw a major fit and sometimes even get violent and if we get thrown off the routine he freaks out. There is so much more I could tell about this boy...he's lovable, he's handsome, he likes to dance, he can write his first and last name.....

I know a young lad who is autistic along side other physical problems. He cannot relate, talk or do most anything with other people. He's in his little world and knows nothing else. I can only imagine it's hard on him but he's always been this way so doesn't know of any other way. He most certainly is no genius. I've seen him do some interesting things but he's not a genius.

I work with people and their families who have Autism. I also have a daughter who has Autism. I believe she is very intelligent, and was able to type and use a computer at age 4. She knows tons about sports info. Just like any group of people, every person with Autism is unique, and you have to get to know them on a personal level. There are lots of websites to meet and talk with A. people. All of us can use a friend, right? One out of 146 births in the US will be an Autistic baby so all of us need to take time and learn about Autism. Thanks for asking.

FIRST OF ALL< AUTISM IS NOT JUST RAINMAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my son was diagnosed last year with ASD( autistic spectrum disorder) he is very high functioning so we are blessed in that area BUT it still is difficult. He has over a 1500 word vocabulary by the time he was 3( turned 3 in december 2006 ), he can read 9 books, he is now spelling, he can also site words, example if I write big brown bear, he can say it within 5 second of looking at it. He knows all shaps including trapezoid, hexagon ( you get the picture ) He can add to 21 now, he has also memorized where all the train tracks are in town since he doesnt like the noise.
We can get within 2 miles of a train track and he is already covering his eyes. We are also lucky that he is aware of himself in a group and social setting and he is affectionate. Phsychiatrist ( sp ? ) have said he is a extremely intelligent and we will never have to worry about him academically .
When you first find out your child is autistic its like your child dies ( well the one you knew ) and you now have this clean slate and answers to so many things you questioned before. I am very tuned into my kids and I expected something for awhile. My husband went thru a deep depression, he stayed up countless hours tryin to find a cure, anything to make it go away. We also have a daughter who is getting ready to turn 2 and we were concerned would she have it but watching her we know she doesn't and her and her brother ADORE each other.

We just went thru 2 months of serious aggression with him where he would just explode, and to get him under control was a monstrous task and would physically wear us out.

I remember nights after putting the kids to bed just cursing at GOD I hated him for doing this to my baby and to us, why us when crackheads have perfectly healthy children. GOD gave me my son to teach me thing things I need to learn, patience, empathy, compassion.

The one thing I hate the most is that sometimes he wont transition well from lets say the park to the car and he starts to meltdown, people look at me like control your kid, and Im like if YOU only knew. I've heard people say " My kid never shuts up, they get into everything," They take advantage of the things their children can do and its really sad.

Watch this video called autism everyday, MY SON is not nearly this bad off hes a small percentage that is way above average.

and watch the video I made of him afterwards

and yes I ADORE MY SON, he is a gift from GOD and im telling you all now, HE doesnt have to get ready for society, YOU have to get ready for him!

My friends say I'm artistic, but I think they're just being nice. I do like drawing and painting, though.
