I just replaced my radiator because of a leak. Now when i drive in slow or stop traffic, the thermostat rises above half-way. There is no smoke coming out of the hood, and no leaks. What can be wrong with it? Is it the fan or the thermostat?

the thermostat gauge rises above 3/4 in stop and go city traffic. But once i get it to start running again, it'll drop to about a half. Normally it only goes to 1/4 of the meter.

I'll run it on idle and the same will happen. What should i tell the mechanic?

we had a car that done that and we ha also just put in a new radiator.it turned out that it was just the *new* radiator soaking up all the antifreeze so first check that and if its not that its prolly the thermostat.if its neither of those i have no idea what it could be.i know alot of older cars kinda load up if you sit in traffic for a long time but theres not really much you can do about that.
hope this helped! =]

I'm thinking that vehicle has a electric fan ,if the temp gets half way the fan should be running if its not its the fan or the switch that is in the bottom of the radiator I believe .If the fan runs it could be the thermostat, its the easiest to fix.Good luck

i own a repair shop, and it could be either one on it,if you can verify that the fan is coming on when its is supposed to then id say the thermostat, but half way isn't hot on that one,is barely above normal,,you can do this start it up,and let it idle and see if the cooling fan does come on,if it does,id say go ahead and put a new thermostat in it just to be safe, and then see where that hand rises too,it should be in the normal range for it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

in the journey that your gauge is working the way you're saying that's then you definately could in simple terms have a bad gauge or perhaps temp. sensor. Ask a mechanic to take the temp of your engine on the same time as its working. the common difficulty is the radiator fan. The relays tend to bypass undesirable and start up working intermittently or in simple terms crap out all together. Run your vehicle for extra or less 15 to half-hour and hear for the radiator fan to instruct on. solid luck.

If it occurs in city traffic it is more than likely the fan. If you have air conditioning, turn on the a/c and the fan should come on. If it doesn't it's definitely a fan problem.

it could be either 1.if the fan is not working,it will overheat and also if the thermostat is sticking,it also can cause it to overheat.

check both.. But what should it read. or what did it read befor you changed the rad..The new rad may be plugged or clogged. You may have a collapsed hose. Some cars run hot some dont, an S15 runs cold..Where a firefly runs hot
