that people dedicate 'things' to people who have already passed away? I don't get that. They are gone and will never know. Why not give the praise to someone who can benefit from it? What do you think?

You must remember that funerals are for the living. I think for the most part you are right. But there are people that ask you to make a donation to the society that the person had passed away from.

I hope that makes sense. Let me put it this way. If a person dies from cancer, the family usually asks in lieu of flowers to make a donation to the Cancer Society. And so on. They realize that it may be too late for their loved one, but with enough donations, they may find a cure and you will not have to suffer the loss from that disease.

Anything that is done for the dead is more for the living. Dedicating something to someone who is gone perhaps makes the person feel closer to the departed. It's also a way to show how much the person respected the departed. I imagine if I ever do something that needs to be dedicated, I will dedicate it to my dad since he was such an influence on the person that I am now. It is also a way to insure that in some way the departed has been immortalized.

I would say, "no," this doesn't make sense. Except for Dale Earnhart!! I mean, who wouldn't want to dedicate their own automobile to Dale Earnhart??
