My kid wants to know why we are called the United States of America when we make up only a fraction of the Americas and why we aren't called the United States of Columbia. I told him there is already a country called Columbia but technically they would still be different. What can I do to show him how to take a proactive approach to changing things like this? Help him write a State Rep or what?

When were we ever called the US of Columbia? Why would you want to teach him how to take a proactive approach to change the name the Us of America? You may want to teach him how to find out about the history of this country, how it was founded, how it grew into what it is today and maybe give him something to be proud of.

If you break it down grammatically, of is a possesive word. We are saying that we are a group of united states that belong to America. I would assume he is getting the Columbia from the District of Columbia, but you might want to ask him why he thinks it should be called Columbia...

I don't know that we've ever been called the United States of Columbia, unless you are thinking that they should have been named that because of Christopher Columbus. The America's were named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who, I believe, actually discovered them before Columbus.
just look up Vespucci on a search engine.

Amerigo Vespucci it was named after, he loaned money to Columbus and did a bit of exploring himself. I think he also as a Venetian merchant of that time helped invent compound interest.

That was a decision the Founding Fathers made - no more, no less.

Great question, though - you get a star!
