I have (had) a Curlyhair tarantula. Last weekend he went down into the soil to molt. His abdomen had darkened and he had stopped eating so I didn't worry much. I sifted through his soil completely last night looking for him and he was nowhere to be found. I know he didn't escape becaue I hadn't opened his container since I'd seen him last. When I was sifting through the soil, I found what looked like little pieces of him! Except that they looked like they were the result of a molt. I found some legs (they were hollowed out like the spider had molted) as well as the abdomen (also hollow). I'm just trying to figure out what happened. He was only the size of a dime and this is only (as far as I know) his 2nd time molting. Could this have just been the result of an unsuccessful molt? There were no crickets in his container so I know they didn't eat him. It's driving me crazy! Any feedback is appreciated

when i say i sifted through his soil i mean COMPLETELY. After sifting, I emptied the container and the little guy is DEFINITLY not in there. besides the little pieces I found. But I really don't think they were pieces of him, just pieces resulting from a molt.

if he got to stressed with an unsuccessful molt it could have been the cause of death

i would say as a result of sifting possibly during his molting process could have caused him to die or possibly crushed him which can be done if small enough with out noticing....
