My son's not quite two weeks old yet, and he stares every time I eat too, so I wouldn't base it 100% on that. :-)
The first thing to do is ask your pediatrician about it..most doctors say start somewhere between 4-6 months. your doctor will give you a list of starter foods as well as some guidelines (only introduce one food at a time, don't be afraid to try the same food over and over before deciding your baby really doesn't like it, wait a few days between introducing new foods, etc...).
some babies are ready to start earlier than others, but parents always want to believe their babies are ultra-advanced so don't be afraid to ask your pediatrician instead of making the decision for yourself.
good luck & hope this helps!

If he's breastfed, he could probably wait until about 6 months, unless he's big for his age, then about 4 months. You'll be able to tell if he wants to nurse continually, but can't seem to build your supply up enough to satisfy him.
If he's bottle fed, you can tell he's ready if he's still hungry after finishing an 8 oz bottle at several feedings in a day. Expect this at about 4 months.
So at 3.5 months, he may be ready, but I wouldn't think his staring at you when you eat would have anything to do with it. Babies stare at all kinds of things- it's one way they learn.

i am a mother of five, a lot of people disagree with me here but my children are better then healthy so i,ll tell you what i think, your son is way to young to start on solids, at about 6 months put a little baby cereal in his bottle before bed, then wait til he is one and go straight to real food no baby food, unless your child is visible hungrier and not satisfied with just formula then try oatmeal in the am but no sooner then about 8 months, this is what i did and do, at one throw away the bottle, my children are 17, 15, 12, 2 and 6 months they are great weight and height, they also all love veggies and a large variety of foods, because i have offered them to them all there life, never label your child picky all children go thru picky fazes but it will pass, whatever you choose to do about solids make it your choice not that of pressure from friends or relatives, you will decide out of love and no one knows your son better then you

well when my kids were babies the bottle didn't fill them up so i started with rice cereal just like 2 ounces at first just a little even if he wants more remember hes like a puppy they will eat until there is no more.to much will constipate him you also want to make sure that he is not allergic.as always when you introduce something new try that only for a few days to see if there is a reaction.but usually doctors want you to wait until at 5 or 6 months cause their digestive tract isn't fully formed

You really should wait. He is probably interested in what you are eating, but that does not mean his body is ready to digest solid food. If he is satisfied by his bottles or nursing and is growing at a steady rate there is no reason to start him on cereal. It will probably make him really constipated and there will be no benefit to his health.

All kids are interested to watch you eat at that age, but his digestion isn't ready for solids yet. The recommended age is 4-6 months.

I think your baby is way too young to start him on solids. I would wait until he's about 6 months old. Starting him too early could result in allergies. Breast milk or formula is all he needs right now.

Basically, formula fed babies can start solids at 4 months while breastfed should wait till 6 months.

My major is Nutrition and I learned that a baby can start having solids like cereal at 4 months. Make sure that you feed your baby cereal with a spoon. Do not add it to his bottle.

I've always heard that you shouldn't start solid foods until 6 months. They can't digest the foods until then. I started both of my kids at that age and we didn't have any problem.
