compacting the drive slows it down! I service PCs for a variety of things inc slowness, normallyt a spyware /virus sweep, delete crap, uninstall unused programs then followed by defrag. PM me if you need further help,thunderbird_ii_uk. to defrag, right click on hard drive, select tools / properties / defrag.

To defragment the hard drive, go to the Start menu, go to programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, then System Defragmenter. If you have Windows XP Media Center Edition, you will have an Analyse button. If you do, click the Analyse button before you click Defragment. Analyzing will tell you if you need to defragment at your volume. If it says you need to do defragment, defragment then. If it says you don't need to defragment at this volume, you should still defragment. It will take a while to do the process, but when it's done, a little window will appear, and you can view the results of the defragmentation.

First, run a clean up (from Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup).
Don't select the compact old files option, but select the rest.
Then go through the same process but select Disk Defragmenter for the last option and run that.
Finally, and probably most importantly, go to Start - Run - type 'msconfig' and in the 'startup' tab deselect all those programs you don't need to be running. You will probably find stuff like msn messenger, quicktime, realplayer. Just deselect them and restart.

you could try downloading a program called O&O Defrag, youll get a trial version but itll sort out the hard drive with regards to defragging it, if that fails, reinstall the whole damn thing, i did that for my Dad when his laptop started getting slow, but that was caused by him installing all sorts of rubbish from the web :-)

no seriously we could have beautiful children :)
ahem, anyway if you wanna defrag then go to www.download.com and search for auslogics. you'll find a auslogics disk defragmenter. download that and run it on your computer. it is much better than windows defragmenter, it actually shows you the files you are defragmenting and how much defragmentation there is left.

Start> control panel> my computer> view system information> advanced> performance. settings> advanced> virtual memory> change> , change the value to a higher number than where it is currently set, example 333 changes to 510, this will speed things up quite a bit.

The best way to easily speed up your laptop is to add more ram. If you are running XP and your video pulls off of your system ram you need at least 1 GB.
