There could be myriad reasons that people might fear death. They might fear the unknown(the biggest reason), or perhaps their belief system has taught them there is something unpleasant about it, some might see it as a kind of failure, or perhaps some simply fear that their belief system may be wrong about what happens when they die. Other people may say they fear death, but actually be worried about things surrounding the act or concept. For example, they might fear being in pain, or unable to communicate a last message, or being away from loved ones, or having not done something they feel it's important to accomplish.
It's likely most of these simply stem from the common human fear of the unknown. Until we have verifiable proof of what happens to the spirit or essence of a person after the body ceases to function, people will always seek comfort regarding that which we all must someday face.

I don't know. Its like I'm a little concerned about how I'll die, but not of death if that makes sense. I guess it could be the unknown, there again they may have led a life where they think they might go to hell....I suppose that would make you fear death.

The afterlife is unknown, everyone fears not knowing what is going to happen in their life next. Death also separates people from others that they have loved throughout their life.

One it's the "Final" & Two "Takes away freedom" as I know it. Plus, I learned this song from my baby sitter and it's scared me since:
This song describes what happens to your BODY:
“Did you ever think when a hearse goes by,
“That you may be the next to die”?
They wrap you up in bloody sheets and
Throw you down about 6 feet.
The worm’s crawl in, the worms crawl out
The worms play pinnacle on your snout
The big black bugs with big green eyes
Crawl in your nose and out your eyes.
Your stomach turns a gasping green,
And puss comes out like whipping cream,
You spread it on a piece of bread and sit there eating it while you’re dead.
Your hair turns gray,
Your teeth decay,
And that’s the end of a perfect day.”

i think for some people, it's the fear of not knowing what will come. for others it will be the unexpected nature of death, you never know when you will die. and then for some it will be that fear of not being accepted into heaven and having to be in hell or purgatory.
