Unfortunatly, transmission repairs are not usually cheap. Before you take it somewhere try to find out which shop has the best reputation in your area. SOME things can be repaired but you may be looking at a rebuild. it's possible it could be as high as 15-1800 for a total rebuild. That said, it's possible it's something less expensive such as band adjustment or a bad torque converter. Maybe just a few hundred dollars. Regardless, it would be best to get it serviced soon. Good luck!

Whoever you take it to will tell you to get it rebuilt or trade it in for a rebuilt, and they'll be right. You don't want to spend $800 to fix one problem and still have a dozen others waiting to happen. It can run anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 depending on who you go to.
10 to 1 if you took the pan off it would be full of sludge. Transmissions are the most neglected thing on cars. If you flushed them every 60,000 miles with synthetic fluid, most of them would outlive you.

Could be that the transmission is slipping, or that it's stuck in a low gear.

If the car is 12 years old, I wouldn't worry about fixing it, unless you have an emotional attachment to it. It would probably be cheaper in the long run to get a newer car that would get better gas mileage.
