I live in San Diego and i'm having a birthday party. Just family. A guy at my work is a DJ and he said he'll do it for $250. But I just want music. Nobody will be dancing. I'm sure that's a good deal but I want to know what is the regular price and how much of a discount he's giving me. I don't even know how much DJ's charge. I'm thinking they charge about 5 or 6 hundred but i'm not sure.

If you are having a birthday party expect to pay between 85-125 / hour. If he is a good DJ and has a good mix of music $250 is not a bad price. It doesn't matter if people will be dancing or not the same amount of work goes into creating good background music. Background music sets the mood and keeps the night moving.

If you were looking for wedding prices they are typically more expensive with DJs charging 100-250 an hour.

hope this helps,
Anthony

So look up DJ's in your local yellow pages, and call a few. If they won't give you an estimate over the phone, they're unprofessional, and you don't want them any way.
