Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto died 18 April 1943 over the Island of Bougaville after being shot down by a flight of P-38 Lighting's from 339th Squadron USAAF. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isoroku_Yamamoto for more information.

His plane was shot down by US fighters over an island in the South Pacific. It had been learned from a Japanese coded message (the US was routinely reading these) what his planned itinerary was, and the planes were lying in wait.
