First off try to find out where they are getting in, if at all possible, & block that area off.
When we lived in another apt. we had this problem. I found out they were coming in around the pipes at the sink. So I bought steel wool & wrapped it around the pipe. That solved the problem. If you are allowed, a cat is a BIG help. When I lived in the house we had a mouse problem because it was a new area, formerly fields. We got a cat and that
ended the mouse problem very quickly. It also depends on if you have children how you
deal with mice. There are humane traps, safer than poisonous mouse sticky pads. Then you can dispose of the mouse outside of the house. But you have to work fast, they are fast. I hated it when we had the mouse problem--it gives you the feeling of a contaminated dirty place. YUK! Good luck. I hope you get rid of them. Talk to your super, if you haven't already. There must be other people having the problem and they should bring in an exterminator. Again, good luck. You deserve it--4 years is a long time.

I use D-Con. Just make sure no children or animals (other than the mice!) can get to it. It comes in a little yellow box. I buy a package that has 6 boxes. You pull back a flap on the box to expose the poison, which looks like little green pellets. Put the box in some dark, out of the way place like the back of a cabinet, or behind a couch, somewhere near where you think the mice are. They like it, and will eat it. The great thing about D-Con is that it deteriorates the mouse from the inside out. I know this sounds cruel and gross, but the benefit is that there will be no bad odors when the mouse dies. He'll just crawl off somewhere and you'll never see him again.
As for what causes them- they are just part of our world. They're everywhere. Just try to be reasonably clean and not leave anything out to attract them, like opened food containers or dirty dishes. If you live in an apartment, they could be coming from someone else's apartment. When you do get them, set out poison and get rid of them. No big deal really.
Some people prefer traps, but then you have to remove the little body, or throw the whole trap away. I do not recommend glue traps. I've tried those. The little critters get stuck to them, but don't die. They lay there squirming and making little squeaky noises until you dispose of them. It's awful.
Use D-Con.

mice like to come in for the winter, i always close all the holes up. like around your pipes under the sink, caulking and or filling cracks in your baseboards, tighten loose electrical outlets, they often come in thru dryer vents, they can get water from your frig pan... empty it. they love cabinets - look for holes and fill them. then lay traps along your walls, they follow the wall instead of running out in the open, usually! look outside for possible entry places. clean up any trash or wood piles, yard refuse. that's all i can think of now. check out your neighbors!
