The question is WHY would you stop a 4 month old from sucking their fingers? You normally don't break thumb sucking or until at least one year.

It has long been known that sucking has a purpose other than for nutrition for most infants. It can also help infants self-soothe or comfort themselves, whether they suck on a pacifier or their fingers.
Not all infants are able to calm themselves in this manner, so in some ways you're lucky.
Infants have a need for non-nutritive sucking until they're at least 6-9 months old. So let him...

Why do you care? There is nothing wrong with finger sucking; in fact, after seven babies I can tell you it's preferable to a pacifier (they can control their fingers long before they can put a paci back in on their own), and even the dentist will tell you not to worry about it hurting their teeth till they are like 4. My seven year old still sucks her thumb at night and the dentist couldn't even tell by looking at her teeth. Let it go and be glad your baby self-soothes.

You can try introducing a pacifier. However, I don't think that there is anything wrong with him self-soothing himself to sleep. My little guy does it too and I don't have a problem with it. I am glad that he is able to use his fingers to soothe himself back to sleep...he wakes himself up at night and no longer cries..he sucks his fingers and falls back asleep.
Your baby will not do it forever, so don't stress over it.

Usually babies do it this when they are teething. This continues for a few months until their teeth come in. Try using a Nuk or Binky if you don't like the finger in the mouth.
Best of Luck!

Why don't you give him a pacifier? You can always take a paci away when they are around one.. you can't take fingers away. This will fulfill that sucking need.. and pacifiers have been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS too.. is what i read in American Baby Magazine.

I alternated letting my son suck his fingers and using a paci when he was a newborn. He is 9 months old and he isn't hooked on either. Good luck!

I sucked my fingers until I was 8 years old. I turned out fine. Let the kid suck his fingers, he's a baby.
