I received two gift cards for two different linen stores and would rather have cash which neither store will provide. I understand that some states require a cash refund by law. I'm taking a road trip soon and wonder if I will be passing through any of the states where I can trade in my gift cards for cash.

i believe that california is the one of only states that has such a law. however, you need to have a receipt that shows cash purchase, and that the purchase of the cards were in the state where this law is in effect

you can sell the gift cards online, but you'll only receive 60-80% of their value, usually. if you decide to sell online, don't give the gift card account number, or it can be used without your knowledge. ask other gift card sellers what they do

you cannot sell the gift cards in public, in many places, because it is called solicitation.

you can also use the cards as gifts for other people.

Most gift cards you can sell on Ebay for close to face value if you'd rather have the cash.

But, it wouldn't be a refund, you didn't buy them. If this IS legal somewhere, it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of.
