it wouldn't be a Lancer after you were done with it. You would need a different motor, transmission, new driveshaft, universal joints, rear axle and differentrial, new front axle and related compnonents, cutting and welding services, changes to steering and suspension, and then certifications to go through, probably would cost you more than the Lancer cost to start with. Just go buy a rear drive car to start with, it will be cheaper, and everything will be made to work with everything else.

It would probably be cheaper to just buy a rear wheel drive car.

The front wheel drive car has a transverse engine...that is, the engine block sits sideways, and the transmission is built onto the bottom of it so that it drives the power downward to the front differential to drive the front wheels.

To make it a rear wheel drive, you'd have to remove that engine and install one that has the power output at the back of the motor, so it could drive a transmission that was coupled to the BACK of the motor...and then drive power to the rear wheels.

With the cost of the new motor and transmission and the cost of the new rear end and front ends you'd need, as well as the modifications you'd have to make to the suspension to hold the new engine and transmission, it would be better to just buy a rear wheel drive car.

Plan on buying a rear wheel drive car. There's nothing strong enough to mount leaf springs or radius rods to line and center the rear end housing. The rear sub-frame needs to be carefully designed for a rear wheel drive to work perfectly.

it would be cheaper to buy a new car. especially if the Lancer never was offered in a rear wheel drive model

most of these people's answers don't address your question, so ignore them. that said, a lot, several thousand at the least. you have to have a sub frame assembly, mustang would probably be a popular choice and then you would have to connect a steering coloum to it and then you will need a rear suspension. not to mention engine ,tranny, and rear end
i wanted to do this to a 1986 4-door dodge aries with a small block v8. keep it stock looking like an old lady's car.
pull up to the red light along side some young dude with the front wheel drive hot rod with big chrome tip muffler that sounds like a lawn mower and his seat reclined back so it looks like he laying down. his frigging bass so loud the ground vibrates. when light turns green .....................................yahoo !

it would be expensive, several thousand dollars, just for the conversion. aside from that, you would also have to change the engine and transmission. if you were to do that, the best way would be to actually build a tube frame to set the body onto before installing the engine and trans and new rear end into. if you search the net you may be able to find kits out there. i know there are kits out there to put a 5 liter mustang engine into the ford focus cars.
