An explorer is intrepid by nature. He would hardly be timorous
(of a timid nature), callow (immature) heedless (thoughtless or inconsiderate). More likely he would be virile (masterful), or dauntless (fearless). Either would be a good choice although personally I would go for dauntless. I don't think he would consider the idea of whether his action is seen by others or not. He does what needs to be done because of who he is as a person. Actually I think intrepid would be a better choice than any of the above words. It means having fearlessness, fortitude, and endurance.

CALLOW

Because he was callow in the face of danger, the explorer won the government's highest award for conspicuous bravery.

operative word "conspicuous" - the course of action one is likely to take because he wants to show off or he wants all attention directed to him.

True brave men are not like that...true brave men are the ones who are dauntless and heedless in the face of danger.

The ones who are just putting on a show are the callow (immature) ones. Timid (timorous) people are incapable of showboating. Virile men may be brave in the face of real danger but they are macho enough to back off when it's only for show.
