I don't think that it's any more difficult than ancient times. I just think that it's a lot different. the problems we face now are simply more different but no less complex than, lets say, those in the early 1900's, or even 1800's. we could even go back to the Middle Ages. In the 1800's, we had the Industrial Revolution. The West was being settled, abolitionists were on the rise, tensions began forming between the North and South, and Lyceums were starting up all over the place. It was a hectic time period. so many things were coming at people in America from all over the place. i'm sure it would have been the same way in other countries as well. in the 1900's, there were immigration issues, city hygene issues, the Jazz Age, bootleggers, Prohibition, the beginnings of World War I. those were different issues than in the 1800's, but no less stressful or difficult or complex. there were plenty of things going on that made things difficult to solve.
Even if we go back to the Middle Ages, people still had to deal with constant war, changing power relationships, threat of invasion, the plight of the poor serfs, and religious tensions. Problems will be constantly changing, but their complexity and ability to affect a large number of people won't change. they'll just become different with each generation.

I hope my answer helps!

Human survival, from the beginning of recorded history, has always been a struggle.

And it doesn't seem to matter how many things we invent to make life easier - from vaccinations to automobiles - we will always be faced with challenges of some sort.

That's a good thing - humans need challenge in order to make them strong, weed out the unfit and keep the cycle going.

I remember saying to my parents "You have no idea how hard it is to be teenager these days! Our problems are different from yours, you couldn't possibly understand!" My mother explained how difficult it was when she grew up during the Depression, how there was no food, no work, and no luxuries like I had... but I didn't see any comparison to my own problems in the 70's.

Twenty-odd years later, I heard the same bewailing from my own teenagers - and I would say "Yes, you're absolutely right, I really don't understand. So, tell me about your troubles." It seems the challenges themselves are indeed different, but the coping and problem-solving skills remain the same - and only knowledge and experience gives us that understanding.

Different yes, more challenging? Most people of today would die of starvation if confronted with the difficulties of yesteryear.
No can to open for food, or a switch to get the hotplate going. No microwave.
Cut down the tree and split the wood, and grow the veggies, make a fire in the kitchen stove. Pump the water outside and bring it in to cook. Kill the chicken, pluck the feathers, remove the guts, cut it apart. Eat things before they spoil, - no fridge.
Make your own clothes.
Are you kidding?

Every era and generation thinks they are living in the toughest times. And each can make a case for their position. So each lives in its own tough and difficult times.

Yes. I believe so. Things weren't so easy back then, and everyone had to strive for what they wanted, and I do admit, we do too. But we have too much frickin wars going on. And they did back then too, except we have technology.
