Just remember that reptiles live a long time. Keep in mind that the novelty might wear off after a while, and then you'll have a reptile you'll have a reptile you don't know what to do with.

But I would recommend a corn snake. These are mid-sized snakes that grow to 4-5 feet in length and come in a variety of color patterns. Corn snakes are considered one of the best beginner's snakes because they generally have a docile temperament and don't have high requirements for humidity, lighting, etc. They just need a 20 gallon long terrarium, a heating pad under one side, two hiding places, a water bowl, a good substrate like reptile bark, and maybe a climbing branch. They need to be fed thawed mice once or twice a week, depending on their age.

Another good option would be a leopard gecko. These little lizards have cool coloring and are good for novice reptile owners.

My Friend, bless you for caring about your brother.. some smaller reptiles are the Gecko and some salamanders.. ALL need a roomy tank, heat source, a " hot rock" proper food and water.. Try to stay away from BIG lizards.. I had Ingunna's for years they grew to over 5 feet and they need LOTS of work.. check out RELIABLE places on line, and your local pet store.. but also contact you local zoo. explain you situation and perhaps they can help you.. if you have a Natural History museum call them as well You need to speak to someone who does reptiles ALL the time NOT just for a hobby...I wish you much success

You may not want to get your brother a live pet.... depending on the kidney problem.. Many animals, including reptiles can carry Salmonella bacteria..which may not be good for your brother. I would suggest that you talk with his doctor before you try to cheer him up... (I know that this is not what you wanted to hear but I suggest that you DO think about it before you get him a pet).

I would recommend leopard geckos or corn snakes. Geckos are some of the easiest lizards to take care of and don't mind being handled. You can find sweet, healthy geckos from almost any breeder on the net for less than a hundred dollars. Here are some breeders I recommend:

That's very thoughtful of you! Good luck!

I work at a zoo, and deal with many types of reptiles. In my opinion, a Corn Snake or a Leopard Gecko would be your two best choices. They are easy to care for, and easy to find.

Good Luck!

I'm sorry to hear about that, hope he gets better and it's very sweet of you to do these for him. I would get him either a leopard gecko or a bearded dragon. Bearded Dragons get bigger and require a larger tank. Good luck and do a lot of research first before you get one.

Hotsnakes has a point you may want to check with his doctor first.

snakes or lizards are pretty cool. although they cost a bit :LIZARDS (includes iguanas, monitors, bearded dragons, chameleons, uromastyx, anoles, skinks, and geckos)

Initial cost: Bringing home a new lizard will cost about 10 times the cost of the lizard itself, for a minimum of $100. For smaller lizards, you can expect to pay $20 for a 10 gallon aquarium, $50 on light fixtures and bulbs, $10 on an automatic timer, $25 on cage accessories like branches and plants, and a minimum of $10 for the lizard itself. The larger lizards, like iguanas, monitors, and water dragons will need a cage that costs at least $200, and some people spend $2000 or more.

Maintenance: Each year you will spend about $300 on food, $350 on vet bills, $10 on cage accessories like plants and branches, $20 on grooming supplies, and $60 on lamp bulbs, for an average of $745 per year, or $14 per week.

SNAKES (includes boa constrictors, pythons, corn snakes, king snakes, and others)

leopard geckos make great pets. i have one. they are cheap to feed but i would research on internet about care etc so you know for yourself. i am recommending this to you as they are lovely gentle creatures and they very rarely bite. they are easy to tame down. i have had mine for just over a week and she already asks to come out for a cuddle!

talk to a herpitologist, reptile specialist. usually where reptiles are sold, they have a list of clubs/breeders that will help you out!
healthy wishes to your bro!
