Considering a move to Denver for a job relocation. Grew up in Chicago and never lived anywhere else. Will it compare well. I like big city life, but also enjoy the outdoors.

Denver has some similarities to Chicago. They're both fun, progressive cities with a lively, walkable downtown area. The 16th Street Mall in Denver is no Michigan Avenue in terms of its stores, but the effect is the same - a big walkable shopping district in the middle of the city. Denver's a little more sprawling, but they're working on a light rail system which, in the way its trains radiate from downtown, works somewhat like the "L".

Denver also has a similar young population and a strong interest in sports (the Broncos get as much adoration, if not more, than the Bears), art (the new museum is beautiful), and music. Denver has slightly better weather than Chicago - it snows, but then it melts. On the other hand, because it is dryer there, there's less water - there's a river, but nothing like Lake Michigan. Also, both cities are surprisingly flat - Denver is on the plains near the mountains, not in it, so the biking in Denver is quite nice. And the mountains nearby are spectacular, far more fun for outdoor life than anything you'll find nearby or in Chicago.

I think the biggest difference is that Denver is, and really does feel, far smaller than Chicago. To some extent, Denver is trying to remake itself, but it still has a "cow-town" feel at times. In other words, there are many good restaurants, but not the extent of Chicago. There's good shopping, but not to the extent of Chicago. The skyline is OK to look at, but there's nothing like the Hancock Building. The activities in the summer are fun, but it's not the Taste of Chicago. The art museum is pleasant but has nothing like "Sunday Afternoon on the Grande Jatte." It's Chicago-like but on a much smaller scale.

Still, that all said, while I love Chicago, if I had to move, the city I'd most want to go to from here is Denver.

Denver will be a great choice for you. You get big city life (different from Chicago), and you are so close to so many outdoorsie things. I think if this is your choice that you should totally take it. So many people go outside of their zone to take jobs that they want, but settle for the location. Denver is big city and you are in an area where there are so many amazing trails, ski slopes, and active people. I can't imagine hoping for a better job than this for you, as you have explained in the short intro. Anyways, Denver's a great city and I'd go for it!!

Good luck!!!

I think you'd like Denver. Our winter's are quite similiar to chicago's. Our summers are a bit cooler, but we only get a few rainy days in the summer - the rest of the time it's sunny.

Xjoizy claims we get 300+ days of sunshine but we actually get an average of 278 sunny days. The other days are snowy or rainy.

Denver is a nice city, but nowhere near as cosmopolitan as chicago.

Denver is a great place to live, but can you handle over 300 days a year of sun shine and no rainy dreary days ?
Here's a incentive for you, we have authentic Chicago style hotdogs made with the real Vennia beef hotdogs and poppy seed buns, emerald relish and sport peppers and all the other stuff.Yummy

frequently milder. it ought to have very warm days, yet no longer as many or as lengthy stretches. and obviously, the large component is that it's not humid in Denver like in Chicago. they have on the fringe of a similar volume of snow, even though it melts quicker in Denver.
