You know that dangerous to your health. Plus Liquid Mercury is hard to get a hold of.

Most thermostats just use a bi-metallic strip that changes shape, or a simple piece of copper that expands when heated faster than the rest of the thermostat. Don't fool with mercury - that stuff can really screw you up - sometimes just by getting it on your skin.

although I am not sure exactly how much mercury costs, it is bound to be expensive. Because of the risk of mercury poisoning, it is quite hard to obtain.
