On the more serious side: "The Rabbit Proof Fence" (Australian), "Antwone Fischer" and "The Shawshank Redemption" were excellent. Also

'Hotel Rwanda' based on true events is terribly sad because it IS true.
Never Ending Story' - sweet, gentle, fantasy can be viewed at different levels by different ages.
'Casablanca' one of the 3 top classic movies of all time. My media students ( I am a retired Media teacher) insisted they could not like a black and white movie , then they would be begging me to continue it during lunch, they loved it. It is NON -mushy love story.
'Blues Brothers' [another classic] it has every-thing including great music.
'Gone with the wind' [all 4 hrs of it]. Definitely one of the 3 top classic movies of all time. Source of many movie quotes, historical,(set in the time of the civil war), passionate, VERY dramatic, cost a fortune to make.
'I Robot' is more a social comment than sci-fi. Follows the life! (over 100 years) of a robot that becomes human. Asks the question what is humanity? [ I don't usually cry but I cried buckets)
