your question is poorly phrased... the way it is written implies reading aloud and the answer would be yes unless you proofread and then give a synopsis therefore not necessarily using all of the written words...
if you mean to read to oneself without uttering a word is to scan as to understand the gist rather than to memorize the text
i'm pretty sure that covers it

Yes. If you call every word It will take you forever to read a book. I read by looking at phrases and absorb just by looking. You have to train yourself to read fast. It takes a great deal of mental discipline and practice.

Yes. You can get the meaning by scanning (or speed-reading). This is particularly useful in reading technical documents at work!
