I'm weird I like to read the end early on. I like books where knowing the end is not enough because you have to find out other things. For example in one of RUTH RENDELL'S books the 1st line tells who murdered who, where and how BUT one has to read the whole book to find out WHY.
Robbert Goddard books have twists and turns. Also the WHY, in his books, is often much more important with reference to world history than one thinks at the beginning of the book.

Try "Get Shorty," by Elmore Leonard. They made a movie based on it, but the book is 1,000 times better.

The author has a knack of bringing his characters alive, and often in just a matter of a paragraph or two of description you feel you know all about the person. He has a gift for writing dialog that always rings true. And all his main characters are "flawed heroes," imperfect human beings just like the rest of us, which makes them all the more "real" and believable.

I've greatly enjoyed all of Leonard's books, but "Get Shorty" is extra special, in the way the plot unfolds in such a unique and unexpected manner.

Well that is a really hard question as I don't know what your exact preferences are, so here are mine. Orson Scott Card (especially Enders Game), Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs, Jude Devereux, James Patterson, Dean Koontz, Jeffrey Arncher(Sons of Fortune, Kane and Abel).

Any of the Sherlock Holmes books by Arthur Conan Doyle. Any of the short stories are awesome. And The Hound of the Baskervilles is just an amazing mystery story.

Janet Evanovich, the Stephanie Plum series--there's 12 books so far.
Stephanie is a very inept bounty hunter, with 2 men she can't choose between, a hilarious family & best friend, and a tendency toward accidentally blowing up cars!
You'll love this series..and laugh out loud as you read!
