Is five years a good time to look for a new job?

I know my job well. Iam getting bored and want a change. Should I change business groups within my current company or go elsewhere?

Well this is a good question because if you live in the US, the economy here looks like it is slowing down. So on the one hand, now might be the time to strike while the iron is still hot and employers have not stopped hiring. On the other hand, it would be a bummer to start a new company only to have them begin layoffs later this year when the economy isn't as good.

Maybe try a change within your company and in the meantime start floating your resume outside. Make sure that any company you consider looks to be strong in case of a weaking economy. In other words, don't leave to go work for a home builder or an industry like that which could suffer if the economy slows.

Look for advancement opportunities in your company first. If there are none, or if your boss dosen't support your need to grow, then start looking outside the company.

Most businesses want to keep on talented loyal employees, I am sure they will support your move to another department.
