My computer is new, but it didn't seem to come with a micophone. I have an add-on microphone on my computer, but when I use it on messenger or for anything on my computer it gives of a screeching sound, like when you put a microphone too close to the speaker...

What causes this? And how can I fix this?

Thanks...

as said above the screech is 'howl around' or 'feedback' casued by the microphone gain being up so high, the ambient sound is going through your speakers and coming back into the microphone again.
Try my troubleshooting guide to lower the gain on the mic:

Hope this helps

mmmmmm...

Well, the screeching sound is called feedback, if it's what I think it is. Feedback is caused when the sound you are generating from a microphone is played through speakers and re-enters the microphone (actually it's more complicated but there's not much room here).

Try turning your speakers off when you use your mic. That may help. If not it could be something to do with the program that is interfacing the mic with the computer.

I have two different audio programs I use at the same time, on is the standard windows, the othere is yahoo. Both have settings and anti-echo settings. Microphones shouldn't be used within 12" of a speaker, but the volume counts-if you lower it just a little some times , it stops.

Move the microphone away from other devices, such as speakers, also turn the microphone volume down. If you are using MSN, it is listed in options.

Goto START
CONTROL PANEL
SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES
Under the VOLUME tab -> Device Volume, click on ADVANCED
Then on the top of VOLUME CONTROL, click on OPTIONS
Be sure it says ADJUST VOLUME FOR: Playback
Then go down the list and check mark MICROPHONE
Click OK
On the new window of VOLUME CONTROL, be sure that MICROPHONE is muted.

Try that.

EDIT: If that doesn't work
Goto the ADJUST VOLUME FOR: Record
Again go down the list and check mark MICROPHONE
Click OK
Then on that new window adjust the microphone volume, the lower, the less interference.

It's probably the mic. Get yourself a headset.
