Well it kills me here how quickly people are to jump on the mother-in-law, she's got a bad rap already. From my point of view it's one of two things....she's trying to be helpful OR she thinks the baby smells and changes him. There are a lot of times I think my grandson smells, but I don't change him, I just mention it to my stepdaugther that I think he's wet, or smells like urine. Don't be so quick to cast her in a negative light. In fact, why not open your mouth and say something like, "You know, I noticed that you always change his diaper, and I really appreciate it, but all you need to do is let me know and I'll check him out." AND then see what she says in response.

If it creeps you out then you should say something to her about it. You don't have to throw a fit over it, but just be polite and say how the baby was just changed or how you checked and the diaper is not dirty

Oh my gosh, be SO GLAD someone else is changing a diaper and cares! I know it's annoying, esp. with the cost of diapers, and it feels like a loss of control, too, when she just does it without asking, but I have found that that is the old-school way of thinking. Often when I leave my babies with a grandma-type at the church nursery, for example, they will automatically change the baby's diaper without a consideration of whether it needs it or not. I would definitely let this one go and act grateful , even if you don't FEEL grateful.

That would be weird.

Is is an older family member who has children who are grown up? Some older people just like to do things for babies or make sure that they are being well cared for. Maybe she's checking to see if your baby has diaper rash - sounds crazy but it's a possibility.

I don't know man, I'd ask her about it. Kindly, of course.

If it creeps you out go with her or sneak up on her when she is doing it. If you feel weird about it then trust your instinct. That is your motherly instinct kicking in, if it doesn't feel right then most of the time it's not. My mother in law never changed my children without asking unless she noticed they were wet/dirty and i was busy. Keep a close eye on her, maybe even get a hidden camera and put in babies room that way if she is doing anything untoward you have proof.

That would seriously irk me. It sounds more like a mother in law thing. Is she passive aggressivly rude? How is your relationship with her? The only reason I could think for someone to do that is if they want to passivly suggest you are a bad mother who doesn't change their child's diaper often enough. Or she's checking for rashes for a similiar reason. Or she is a pervert, though that's quite the conclusion to jump to. At any rate that would seriously irk me, and I would put a stop to it at once.

Normal in a family is most often defined by the family, not by what other people do.

If it bothers you, ask her about it. "I have noticed your always changing my son's diaper. Does it smell?" Or something like that. No accusations, just curiosity.

Next time say "I just changed the baby." If she insists on doing it then, I think there may be a problem or maybe she believes she is helping you. Anyway, go along for the changing every time.
You are in charge of your baby and his protector.
