This has really been on my mind. It took me a few days after joining Yahoo answers to have the guts to ask this question.

I briefly overheard a rather disturbing conversation between two Caucasian gentlemen at an airport. To make a long story short, they were conversing about black women in popular culture. They state their mutual disdain for black women in movies, commercials, sitcoms and other avenues of TV. One gentleman's final comment before we boarded the plain was: "Can you really make a monkey attractive?" Do all men of other race feel this way? Please, be truthful, yet mindful.

P.S. When we boarded the plane, my seat was located two rows beyond where the two young men were seated. As I passed them, not one, bit both of them made eye contact with me as I passed along. They made frequent trips to the restroom throughout the flight, also making eye contact and smiling at me. But I don't think it was because I look like a "monkey".

If I have offended anyone, please note that I was just tying to tell what had happened to me. If you are offended then I apologize for that. There have been some answers that were taken out of context. If you read what I have wrote, I never once disrespected anyone and I demand the same respect. If you do not like what I am asking, then please by-pass this question. There are more questions were you cn vent, this is not one of them. Again, Peace to all of my brothers and sisters, of any race.

No decent person thinks that way. If I were you, I would pass it off as ignorance. The media presents a certain image of black women in rap videos and movies, so many people make assumptions of the entire race based on what they see. They have problems seeing that there are no two individuals on this planet who are exactly the same.

Honestly, are these the only white guys you know? How could you judge an entire race based on an overheard conversation between two representatives of a races, even if it was a totally offensive conversation. People can be jerks and make rude comments but to think it is representative of an entire race is as meaningless as deciding that these types of comments are in fact made by all men who fly on planes.

Holy crap. I'm so sorry - that's terrible! I can't believe people still talk like that... in public, too.

Well, I'm interested in men, not women, but for me race really isn't a factor. They all look cute, they all can be nice and smart and funny. I guess I like some characteristics that belong specifically to one race - like really dark skin, or curly or red hair - but IMO, men are men!

Sorry about those two stupids at the airport again...

Look at Strom Thurmond. That fool was the biggest redneck racist in the US Senate, he even went through extreme measures to try to keep the civil rights bill from passing. He ran for President as a segregationist, and problably said all kinds of racist remarks about black people in his lifetime. Then he croaks, and everyone finds out that he had a relationship with a black woman when he was a young man, and fathered a black child who he supported financially.

I wouldn't refer to the ones in your example as gentlemen, racist is the most appropriate term. I would interpret their smiling as just being their fake, "polite", and in the closet racist selves. I hope you didn't smile back.

Every asks themselves or others a like questions like this when not around the race they are talking about. Every one is racist a little. Only thing is how far will you let that racism go? Will you let it consume your better judgment. I believe that the "Can you really make a monkey attractive?" comment was a joke. Me my friends(white and Hispanic) make racist jokes ALL the time. Do not let this bother you.

I'm a white woman but if I heard that I would have created such a scene to totally humiliate those men. All races have good & bad & those men were obviously bad for my race

White men seem to be attracted to black women. I think they were joking about the monkey.

White people say dumbsh i t sometimes, especially when it comes to race, blacks in particular.
Obviously they thought you were hot.
I'm white and straight, yet still find black women particularily sexy. I don't know why, but hot black chicks turn me on.

Chances are that they don't really "feel" that way.I will betcha they thought you were hot.It was probably two fairly typical jerks joking (in poor taste) amongst themselves.Guys(all races) are like that, get us away from our buddies and you will find that we really don't mean a lot of what we say.
