Stay silent. Right before they say something, Interrupt abruptly with a:
"You need help."

It gets them every time.

Act befuddled and say..."Huh? Wha? Oh, you were speaking to me." Laugh a bit under your breath..."I just thought you were talking to your reflection in the mirror again."
OR
"Tsk, tsk...I'm so sorry that you feel so badly about yourself that you need to insult others in order to feel superior....by the way, it's not working. Perhaps a few more sessions a week with your therapist will improve your self esteem" shake your head slowly and sadly at the end of this one.
OR
Hey! Quick! Everyone watch! The troglodyte over there is actually making sounds! It almost sounds like REAL words! Awwww, they're soooo cute when they do that!

These may seem a bit strange, but when done correctly (you can't act as if you are affected) they are absolutely maddening.

Is it really wise to come back with an insult?...remember most people do that kinda thing because their already feelingbad about themself....so maybe you should ask them if they would like to set and talk sometime....say hey how bout we get to know each other and explain to me WHY you feel the need to insult me and others. You might be surprised at the answer. Maybe it's someone who has grown up being insulted and that's just all they know.....maybe their trying to reach out to someone/anyone.

React the opposite way they expect you to react.

They probably expect you to react with anger or negativity, so you could:

laugh and say, "What an interesting sense of humor you have!"

"I was thinking the same thing but wasn't sure if I was right or not. Thanks for letting me know."

Stare at them for a while not saying anything, patiently waiting for them to say something more, then say, "Oh is that it?"

Here is a story told of someone who used what Landmark Education teaches in a real-life scenario:

A guy was sitting in a traffic jam in New York City, we'll call him Larry, when the man in the car behind him started blaring his horn and yelling. Finally the angry man got out of his car came up to Larry's car and slammed on the window. Larry got out of his car and screamed "That's my shirt, give me back my shirt. You thief give me back my shirt!" at the top of his lungs. The man ran back to his car, jumped in, and looked totally petrified.

That's an example of doing the exact opposite of what the other person expects you to do in order to get them off of their "racket" as Landmark calls it.

Depends on the insult, your wit, or the heat of your blood at the time. Increasingly I find insults don't do it. You want to grab them and sell them to cannibals who've been fasting for a while.

Cheap!!!

I'm rubber, you're glue!

I don't know--sorry. I suppose it depends on the insult. But, if the person is specifically trying to piss you off, then the worst thing for them is to see you not get pissed off whatsoever.

if its a big insult, punch him or start screaming back even worse insults. If its little, roll your eyes and walk away.

that is most suitable to cover your mouth and say "excuse me" once you burp, and examine out to save your mouth closed to carry it in. in case you're doing this and he nevertheless comments, you may continually say, " It takes one to carry close one" and smile paradoxically at him. you may also say, "no longer undesirable manners, merely solid nutrition", and snigger really, once you may't stay away from a burp. he's likely declaring this stuff because your burping is traumatic him indirectly. i'm hoping that you're trying to stay away from burping in public, via the indisputable fact that is seen undesirable manners, yet often times you merely can no longer help to burp once in awhile. you may opt for to stay away from carbonated drinks, or gassy meals to help with the burping challenge, and examine out taking some over the counter medicine for gas to reduce down on the burping in college.

Go with the classics:

"I am rubber and your are glue, anything you say bounces off me and sticks to you"

It shows that you think their name calling is just a childish behavior.
