Hi. I have a question about my right leg and ankle, and why my socks won't stay in place anymore.

A few months ago, I noticed that my right leg has become slightly red in color and a little larger than my left leg. Also, my right ankle swells up after it's been out of sock and shoe for a few hours. It's swollen when I put the sock and shoe on it, and then it goes back to normal once the sock and shoe are off. My left leg and ankle stays normal at all times.

I am on the heavy side, but I have to wonder...if this problem with my right ankle and leg is all about my weight, then why is my left ankle and leg not affected? I did have an accident almost three years ago when I fell in the street while crossing and I sprained my right ankle pretty good. I had to wear a brace for about a week and I was pretty sore.

Is the swelling of my right leg and ankle all about my extra weight, or could the swelling also have to do with my accident from a few years ago? Maybe a little of both?

I cannot afford to go to the hospital and see a doctor. Are there free clinics where a doctor could examine my leg and ankle and treat my problem?

Also, I've noticed over the last six months or so that my shoes keep eating up my socks. They practically disappear into my shoes! This is annoying, not to mention painful since I occasionally get a corn on the sole of my right foot near the heel, and my bunched up sock only makes it hurt more.

My socks are old but in good condition. Just last summer I was fine; not one fallen sock, and now that's all they do! What should *I* do? Thanks.

I forgot to mention something. The swelling isn't only in my right leg and ankle, it's also in my right *foot*. In fact, that's the first thing I noticed to begin with; that my right foot is now larger than my left foot until, as I mentioned before, I remove the sock and shoe from my right foot and it's shrunken back to normal size.

One other thing, there are times when my right leg and ankle are so swollen that my right leg actually feels heaver. Why is that?

And again, where could I go to get this problem treated for free, or at least, treated for a small fee? Thanks again.

It could be both or a new problem altogether, so a visit to doctor is recommended.

i am not an expert, but i would say that because your ankle was sprained, you didnt let it heal all the way. it may be affected because of your weight if it is not healed all the way. maybe you should wear flip flops or another brace.
