when a company tells you that your interview is going to be a business casual interview, what type of dress is preferred? i am an experienced engineer and have never worn anything less than a suit to an interview. I feel like a damn fool showing up to interviews overdressed.

Nice pair of slacks, ironed, no starch as starch tends to enhance the wrinkles in your legs driving there. Best colors are dark grey or black.

A nice long sleeve button down shirt, ironed (no starch). Best color is white or light blue. Unless you sweat a bit, then black

A sport coat is fine, as long as it's not old and out of style. You can always take it off if it's a warm day. And polished shoes.

Even though it's a business casual interview, it's okay to be one step above what they are wearing in the interview. Most people these days (including myself) forgo the suit, as most offices are business to business casual. That means we all have this suit we only wear to funerals and job interviews. Plus, I've had candidates that are so intent on wearing a suit they wear a suit they've had for 20 years (seriously, the 80's anyone?). And that becomes a distraction.

Business casual for an interview? That's a new one!

I consulted my mom, who teaches business communications at a college, where interviewing is a part of the course, and she suggests you know the culture of the company before you go in. Some companies consider "business casual" gray flannel slacks and a navy jacket. I would err on the side of caution and go with a sport coat - you can always take it off.

Good luck!!

im with you on wearing suits to interviews. Its the only way I have ever interviewed. However when you are instructed that the attire is business casual... (for the guys) I think you still maintain a little formality by wearing a button up shirt and tie and maybe a sweater...but your able to ditch the Jacket....(for the ladies) a sweater set or button up blouse with nice slacks or nice length skirt. ...Hope it helps
