They have a musKy smell. I have two and they don't stink so much themselves as their 'waste' does. If you really keep up on their waste you can hardly smell them. By keep up I mean kitty scoop their cage once a day. You can keep down that smell by the quality food you give them and making sure they have enough water so their ph stays down in the urine.
As far as the ferret itself stinking... A qualified breeder will have their 'stink gland' removed before selling them. But they still retain a musky odor. But it isn't so bad that you can't hold them or snuggle with them. And you can't smell them when you are in the room with them. Just make sure they have a multi level cage so that they are not near where they defecate. Only give them baths once in a while as needed. If you bathe them too much, they will stop cleaning themselves and then you have a whole new stink problem. All together though they really aren't as stinky as people lead you to believe. Keeping the cage clean and feeding them decent food and water will keep their BO way down.
Hope this answered your question..... :)

they don't smell that bad. the most common reasons of bad smelling ferrets are:
1. not changing the litter box as often as needed.
2. a ferret that is not fixed, but most are
3. males do tend to smell muskier than females
it's not an unbearable smell. if you think it is though, then you get the ferrets fixed (if not already), bcuz they will have the glands that produce the oder removed, or buy some ferret deoderizer.
i know from experience with my ferrets, that they don't smell, plain and simple. most people that say ferrets stink really bad, have never owned them.
ferrets are sweet, and energetic :)
i hope i helped!!

Most people who have had ferrets say the smell is'nt to bad..but people who hate them say they stink...go and see someone with ferrets and find out whether you can handle the smell or not!!! I always wore my special ferret handling clothes when I used to play with my ferret...

i think ferrets have a wonderful musky aroma, like a tame skunk, it is the oil in their skin and fur. (skunks don't smell bad, it is only when they spray, and then THEY don't smell bad, but the target of their spray certainly does)
