My algae eater has gotten rather large. It is approx.3 years old.I have had 2 fish die and they were slick. All scales were gone.I did see the algae eater sucking on one of the dead fish.I thought it was already dead, but now i wonder if the algae eater is the culprit.Should i remove it or is this my imagination?

If its a Plecostomus, generally they wont eat live fish. All fish however will eat a dead fish.
If its an Algae Eater( yes, there is a differnce) after a few years can become more aggressive and attack other fish.
Both will probally attack a sick fish that isnt moving around all that much.

If it's a Chinese Algae Eater, get rid of it. It's a meat eater now. For algae control, you might consider the docile and smaller Siamese Algae Eater. It stays about 2 inches and never bothers any other fish. It also eats much more algae.
Study the fish first before buying. There is a False Siamese sold in many places as a Siamese Algae Eater. It's not the same fish. The only difference between the two is the length of the strip along their bodies.
Good Luck.

Algae eaters tend to like the mucus or slime on the body of your fish, but they rarely suck on the fish. I say you look closely on your fish behavior. I don't say you are going crazy because I have seen this behavior with algae eaters, and the BIG ones tend to do this the most. In fact, I have seen one of my Plecos do this.

It depends on what kind of algae eater you have but if it's the fish typically sold in stores as algae eater then odds are good you are right and he's the cause. Chinese algae eaters get large and mean. They are quite aggressive and will kill fish.

If its a chinese algae eater i would trow it out NOW. As they grow older they will start to eat the vital slime coating of other fish, the fish will probally now continue to do this to the other fish unless you rid of it. I have one and it is getting agresive. I want to get rid of it, but my parents are kind of partial.

NO!! they dont eat fishes! they are herbivores thats why they eat algae. it was probably sucking on the fish because it had algea on it or something like that.
