I never heard Franks before, but there is another jazz reference regarding John Mayer.

Mayer has an album out called Room for Squares. Back in 1963, jazz musician Hank Mobley put out a classic Blue Note album called No Room For Squares.

Also, the Try! album by Mayer has a very similar album cover, back cover, and notes as the Blue Note albums of the 50's and 60's. It's so similar that it can't be a coincidence. The front cover is most similar to Art Blakey's album, A Night In Tunsia.

I think your question isn't exactly logical. They could be related or maybe he likes him and has tried to sound like him. I do not know.
