I work in a pretty high profile government job ( my dream job for right now) for an extremely political and semi corrupt government. The government entity is trying to move away from that reputation. I consider myself extremely moral and fair. I go out of my way to treat everyone the same and I go by the book. The past few weeks some of the higher-ups have come to me and asked my to let certain situations slide, or to let their "friends" get away with certain things. I have told the bosses that I won't -- I will walk away from this job before I sacrifice my ethics. That is how I sleep at night- I am a good person and I do the right thing. Some people have suggested I should pick my battles and let these things go. Many of the others at my level in this government do just that, but the thought of getting sucked into the corruption makes me ill. However, the bosses could make my life a living hell. Am I doing the right thing or being overly "righteous"? Thanks!

At the end of the day you have to live with yourself. If you feel good about the things you do or don't do then that's all that matters. You sound like you just need a little affirmation from an outside source. Look for that affirmation within yourself. If your boss makes your life difficult, maybe you could transfer to a different department. Ethics are a very important thing to maintain. Good luck! (easier said than done right)

you're pinoy aren't you?

this is familiar young pinoy professional dilemma, I had my share of this

hey, take it easy ok

no matter what others think or say, your morals is the very thing you should keep pure

you may slide some for a while just to keep favors, but make an emphasis that it is not standard and you personally don't like it

in the end where you are all fed up, you will only have to choose between your conscience or your job,

one of the choices makes you sleep at night, follow your heart
goodluck to you there

Mr. Ed your idea is not legal. As far as the question, I would rather be fired for doing the right thing than suffer the blame and guilt or public attention for doing the wrong thing. You can find a new job. You can't get away from "the man in the mirror".

Considering your job, just let it go.

Honestly- sainthood is far more trouble than it's worth.

A good job in the government is very hard to find, and sacrificing it is 'ethics' can ruin your career and future.

As long as it isn't anything over-the-top, like sexual harassment, abuse, or anything that is actually too bad, just let it go.

And as long as it doesn't ruin America any more than Bush already has, let it slide even then, usually.

There is a big difference between getting sucked in, and keeping a hold of your job.

I'd personally give anything to get in the government.. ((My dream job is to become a spook for the Pentagon.. The black World and WSD is calling me..))

Do'nt ruin your future in the name of petty ethics..

Stand your ground, you sound like you have a good head on your shoulders and you can always go up higher with the people you work with and file a sexual harressment case. It sound like they are wanting you to belittle yourself for the sake of their job. Dont stupe to their level.
