Does anyone know why tv adverts are louder than the programs?

Does anyone else notice this?

Any reasons for this would be welcome!!!

Thanks

Started reading some of the answers which seem to be saying that this increase in volume is to grab our attention - all it does is make me mute the volume and if anything associate these overbearingly loud products being advertised with a negative experience!!!!

To gain impact, commercial advertisers tend to "compress" the sound levels which means they lift them all up to the higher end - and this is what creates the greater impact. However, when compared against programmes which have a wider dynamic range - more light and shade in the sound - this can cause irritation, because the two types of sound treatment don't sit very well together.

It's so you can't miss the ads when they come on - as if anyone watches TV shows just for the commercials (except maybe the Super Bowl).
I've also noticed that local commercials seem to come up exceptionally loud. I don't know if that holds true for everybody or just where I live. But it's irritating!
It should be the other way around - the show is louder than the commercials.
Guess that's why God invented the mute button!

Cheers!! :)

On my TV this only happens on the Sky channels
My regular TV is fine
but go on Sky an turn up the volume to hear Jack Beuer whisper
and BLAM the adverts get you
I like shows which warn you the adverts are coming like "The power of Zorgon" on Sci-fi, or "This show is sponsored by...."
It gives you the few seconds you need to grab the remote and hit MUTE
I don't like the adverts - especially the ones where Barry Scott has to shout!! I try to pretend they don't exist!!
I don't want to be preached to about the state of my finances or buy a new washing-powder or car
That's what the internet is for ... shopping!!

I've noticed that and when that dreadful man that shouts on the Cillit Bang advert comes on we have to mute the TV.

I think the reason that the ads are loud is because everyone goes to make coffee when they are on, and the advertising companies think we can't hear the ads in the Kitchen ( Lol)

Like most people answered, it's to grab your attention. In the USA its illegal for adverts to be louder than the programme. It drives me mad!

G'rrr. Really annoying! Not only adverts. But people speaking is quiet, then suddenly, in a film, or during the news EG. BBC 24, the music suddenly booms, shocking you cos it's so LOUD!
Do TV producers think we're all asleep?

people tend to leave the room during commercials- bathroom break, get snacks etc... this way the ad is still heard. Many people learn and remember things through audio sounds just as well as visual images. So it ensures the message from the ad is still being transmitted to tv viewers.
