Why spend money on a Sidekick? What is wrong with having just a regular phone? Who do you think you are, Paris?

I think your this is more a question of service provider more than it is a question of phone model.

With Virgin Mobile there are some pretty reasonable options. They have a pretty decent prepaid plan, with minutes varying accordingly with different money denominations [x minutes for $x]. They also have a plan that you can switch to easily [$6 bucks a month for wireless service & 10 cents for every minute used].
