I got a job interview with a huge Boston law firm to be a summer intern, although they have never hired college students before. Do you think they might ask me to work for them for free? They have invited me to an interview, and they said the word internship... Do you think big firms that have lots of money will be able to pay me, or do you think they might try to get me to work for them for the summer for no pay?

Usually interneship, is working for free so you can LEARN. Thats what they give you in return, the experience of the job.

Internships are usually not a paid job. This is mainly to gain experience, and you could then apply for jobs in law firms during the school year or for the following summer. Also if you do a good job the company they may hire you on as a paid employee.

They might try you for free...but it would be a good move professionally. the experience would be worth it, your resume would be better for it, and they may hire you after your internship is over, and you would be in a position to ask for hire pay due to your knowledge of their particular inner works...so, either way, do it. Negotiate if you can, but don't raise yourself out of a job!

You've already dealt with numerous narcissist sociopaths at law school. So, what's your intuition? Don't you yet realize that "people" of this ilk are so ego ridden that the thought of manipulating you into working for them, gratis, gives them shivers of joy.

While i certainly have known, and worked with, attorneys with a heart, what it takes to be even an associate in one of such firms, is a relentless grasp on ruthlessnes, greed and abject low consciousness. Unfortunately having a high i.q. along with felon level consciousness is very prevalent in a culture whose role models are all on the partnership track to psychopathy :)))

They probably have lots of money. Try telling them you thought you were going to make $20 an hour, but you would settle for $15.

If you want free experience, work for a charity. If you work for people who are making money, ask if you can take a bite.
