I'm studying journalism in college...anyone have advice? tips on internships? career advice?

Actually, if you're still in college, it's likely that any internship you find will be UNPAID. That's just the nature of the beast.

It's not a field for people looking to get rich, that's for sure.

Internships are mostly about networking. I would first look for yahoo (and similar) groups that are specific to journalist/journalism. About 2 months before summer break I would write up a very nice cover letter and post my resume to the group(s).

Tell them you are interested in a summer internship and would also welcome any informational interviews. Also ask them to pass on your resume to any of their HR and Management colleagues.

Do the same thing with your local news and radio stations. Call and get the name of the HR person, and send your resume. I had a Friend major in journalism and she interned with Fox News in New York (a pretty cool internship if you ask me).

Internships usually mean cheap labor to the company that hires you, so expect minimum wage to maybe 15 per hour. Some larger companies will pay a living stipend on top of that though, so do your research carefully.

As for career advice, don't be hard on yourself if you change your mind about journalism. Your 20's is all about exploration.
