i'm trying to figure out when i use -enoic when naming carboxylic acids.

Unsaturated acids have a double bond in the alkyl group that the carboxylic acid unit is attached to. AIPAC rules are to use the "e'" to indicate this. Thus, ethane is the saturated hydrocarbon C2H6 and ethene (commonly called ethylene) is C2H4.
